There is no magic formula for winning a league title, but there are key ingredients that every team in the new WSL season will be looking to incorporate. Team spirit and unity are crucial components in achieving success. The process of bonding, building trust among players and staff, and establishing strong connections quickly are all essential. However, one aspect that is often overlooked is the importance of enjoyment.
“What keeps players motivated every day, even when they are tired or frustrated, is enjoyment,” says a team captain. “It’s what drives us to push for our personal and team goals, show up every day, give our best, and support each other.”
Having the awareness that performance does not always guarantee desired outcomes, even at one’s best, and the ability to dig deep when necessary are also vital traits. Grit and determination are key characteristics of the most successful and consistent teams. Those who can grind out wins in different styles, whether pretty or ugly, are the ones who ultimately lift trophies.
Adaptability is crucial for both the team as a whole and individual players. Being able to have squad members ready to contribute and add value at any moment tests the management’s ability to keep everyone engaged.
“People aren’t always happy, and that’s okay,” notes the head coach. “Being transparent about selection processes, setting clear expectations and standards, and creating an environment where players can express themselves authentically on and off the pitch are important in keeping everyone motivated, even those who aren’t starting. It’s about fostering a high-performance culture where players are challenged and can grow, regardless of their playing time.”
This sense of belief is infectious and is what ultimately rallies the fans behind the team. When supporters see players fighting for the collective cause, they are more likely to fully support their team through thick and thin.
